Mail Merge 101

What is Mail Merge?

Mail Merge is the utilization of a "data source" having "data fields" to complete a "document" having "merge fields". During the printing process, the "merge fields" on the document are completed with the data contained in the "data fields" from the data source. Reference Tutorial Page entitled "Sorting data" as an example of a data source.

Mail Merge is commonly used for the fast and efficient processing of "mass" or "bulk" mailings.

Mail Merge can be used for many more applications than for mailing documents. Around the home and office it can be used for making labels for file folders, file drawers, parts bins, basic part identification, storage shelves in home or office, shipping labels, etc. Mail Merge can be used wherever "variable data" is to be printed utilizing a Data Source. It is easier to make a Data Source and use Mail Merge than to process individual documents one at a time.
